Sample Letter of Intent to Homeschool - UPDATED 2024

I’m not going to bore you with the side chatter. If you need to, read this post first. Otherwise, here is how I would word my letter of intent to homeschool if I had to re-submit one this year for my daughter.

Key Points:

  • most states require a letter of intent to homeschool (aka public school system withdraw letter)

  • I would keep the subject bold

  • I would replace all CAPITALIZED BITS OF INFORMATION with my real information and remove capitalization… or not, doesn’t really matter

  • I would email this to her assigned public school; CC the superintendent

  • I would expect them to message me back saying something like “hey, you have to mail this here, or submit this form here” if they needed something else

To Whom it May Concern

I am writing to inform you that CHARLOTTE SMITH will no longer be enrolled at ABC ELEMENTARY within the WHATEVER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM effective immediately. Please consider this my Official Notice of Intent to homeschool CHARLOTTE under NORTH CAROLINA STATE LAW.

CHARLOTTE will receive her education via our private homeschool, AVIT ACADEMY. If you have any questions or require any additional forms for your records, please write our SCHOOL: 1234 SMITH STREET, PLEASANTVILLE, NORTH CAROLINA, 12345. I kindly request that all records kept by ABC ELEMENTARY are forwarded to said address. This may include attendance, medical, academic, and any other record you may keep on my student.

Best,
